Combustion controls and burner management
Two different jobs that get discussed as one: keeping the boiler safe, and keeping it efficient.

Burner management is a safety system governed by code. Its behavior is not a matter of preference.
The short version
Burner management is the safety system. It proves purge, supervises ignition, watches the flame, and shuts the fuel off when a condition is not satisfied. It is governed by code, and its behavior is not a matter of preference.
Combustion control is the efficiency system: it modulates firing rate against demand and holds the fuel-air ratio across the range. Oxygen trim closes the loop by measuring flue gas and correcting for the things a fixed curve cannot know: air temperature, barometric pressure, fuel variation, and the drift that comes with wear.
Sequencing sits above both, deciding which boiler in a multi-unit plant runs and in what order. On plants with several units this is frequently the cheapest efficiency available, because it costs no new heating surface.
What decides the selection
- Code and jurisdiction
- CSD-1 and the applicable NFPA requirements set the floor for the burner management system, and the insurer may set a higher one. Establish which applies before comparing products. It eliminates options rather than ranking them.
- Retrofit or new
- Retrofitting controls onto an installed burner is the more common job and the more constrained one. What is already there governs what can be done, so the existing equipment has to be identified before anything is specified.
- Oxygen trim payback
- Trim earns its keep on units that run long hours at varying load. On a boiler that runs a few hundred hours a year the payback rarely justifies it, and saying so is more useful than selling it.
- Integration
- Whether the system has to report to a building automation system, and over which protocol. Retrofitting communications later is consistently more expensive than specifying it now.
- Who maintains it
- A control system nobody on site can service is a liability regardless of its capability. Match the sophistication to the people who will actually be standing in front of it at 2am.

- The jurisdiction and any insurer requirements that apply.
- Plant size
- How many boilers, and whether they need to be sequenced together.
- Integration
- BAS protocol, if the system has to report upstream.
- Downtime
- What outage window is available. It frequently decides the approach.
The rest of the room
- Firetube Boilers The workhorse of the commercial boiler room: packaged, factory-assembled, and the default answer for most steam and hot water loads under a few hundred horsepower.
- Watertube Boilers Where the load is bigger, the pressure is higher, or the demand swings faster than a firetube can follow.
- Burners The burner decides the emissions, most of the efficiency, and nearly all of the reliability complaints.
- Feedwater & Deaerators The equipment that decides how long the boiler lasts. Most premature vessel failure is a feedwater problem wearing a boiler-shaped disguise.
- Auxiliary Equipment The equipment around the boiler that decides whether the boiler behaves: blowdown handling, condensate return, surge capacity, and water treatment.
