Boiler trim and safety devices

The devices an inspector looks at first, and the ones with the least room for improvisation.

At a glance
Covers Low water cutoffs, water column, gauge glass, relief valves, controls
Governed by Code, not preference
Relief valves Capacity and set pressure follow the nameplate, not the tapping
Cutoff count Set by CSD-1 and the local authority. Varies more than expected
Steam vs water Entirely different trim

Order against the vessel nameplate. A parts list is not a specification.

Get these in the first message and you get a price back, not a list of questions.

  1. 01 Boiler nameplate Make, model, serial, MAWP, and output. A photo of the plate.
  2. 02 Steam or hot water And operating pressure or temperature.
  3. 03 The device Existing part number and a photo, including the piping around it.
  4. 04 Jurisdiction Which authority inspects the plant, and whether this is a correction of an inspection finding.
What it is

The short version

Low water cutoffs, water column and gauge glass, safety relief valves, operating and limit pressure or temperature controls, and blowdown valves. These are the boiler's protective devices and they are governed by code rather than preference.

Relief valves in particular are not a general-purpose part: capacity, set pressure, and the stamp have to match the vessel they protect. So do the low water cutoffs, and jurisdictions differ on how many and what type.

Getting it right

What makes it the right part

Match the vessel
Relief valve capacity and set pressure are determined by the boiler nameplate (MAWP and output), not by what physically fits the tapping.
Code and jurisdiction
CSD-1 and the local authority govern how many cutoffs are required and of what type. Ask before ordering; the answer varies more than people expect.
Float or probe
Float cutoffs are serviceable and familiar; probe types have no moving parts but need periodic probe cleaning and verification. Existing piping usually constrains the choice.
Steam or hot water
Different trim entirely. Obvious until someone orders from a parts list rather than the nameplate.
